about us

who is fretboard coffee and dave elman?

Fretboard Coffee is a specialty coffee roastery and cafe located in the North Village Arts District of Columbia, MO.

Our coffee shop is the best place to try our award-winning coffees and specialty drinks. Our website also features online ordering, coffee subscriptions, and contactless local delivery. Fretboard Coffee supports restaurants, cafes, grocery stores, and offices with our wholesale program. Lastly we have a coffee truck, affectionately named “Marilyn,” that serves coffee, espresso drinks and cold brew at our farmers market. The truck is also available for hire for local events; email info@fretboardcoffee.com to set up a coffee date with Marilyn!

We roast the best coffees we can find, all ethically sourced (FTO or DTO) and all grown organically, without chemicals or pesticides. We have won Feast Magazine’s awards for Best Coffee Shop and Best Roaster in mid-Missouri every year since 2016.

We also are proud of our community outreach and commitment to environmentalism. We were honored by the Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement Award in 2018 for our use of biodegradable packaging and composting practices that support local farms. We are also proud supporters of The Center Project, Y’all Rock, Ronald McDonald House, various local schools, the North Village Arts District, and many others—all projects that are invested in making COMO an inclusive place where all of us can thrive.

Fretboard Coffee was born out of a conversation Dave and Julie Elman had, over a cup of coffee, about how they wanted to build their lives together. They talked about roasting; supporting ethical growers; cultivating a live music scene that showcases local artists; and giving back to a diverse community. They doodled their dreams on a cocktail napkin back in 2003, and now Fretboard Coffee has grown roots here in COMO, a city that two east coasters are delighted to call home.
